Marshall’s Rakeem Cato and Tommy Shuler ended their college
careers yesterday with a win over Northern Illinois in the Boca Raton Bowl,
about an hour from their hometown of Miami. The two put on one last show for
Herd fans and local family and friends that attended the game.
The pair of seniors, both from Miami Central High School,
each had an outstanding game for the Herd. Cato passed for 281 yards and accounted for 5 total
touchdowns. Shuler caught a career-high 18 passes for 185 yards and a
Cato, a two-time Offensive Player of the Year performer in
Conference USA, finished the season ranked 5th in the country with
3,903 passing yards and 2nd overall with 40 touchdown passes. He was
the MVP in the conference last season.
Cato is now the Marshall career passing leader with 14,079
yards and 131 touchdown passes. Both achievements allowed him to pass Chad
Pennington in the all-time record books. He is also the career leader in total
offense and completion percentage.
Shuler capped off a great career and is now the all-time
leader in Marshall history with 322 catches. He is 4th overall with
3,563 receiving yards and 5th overall with 25 touchdown catches. He also holds the individual record with 19
catches in a game and the single season record with 110 catches.
Marshall’s staff picked two winners signing Cato and Shuler
4 years ago. No one would have thought that this dynamic duo would be as
productive, over the course of their careers, as Chad Pennington and Randy Moss.
