Michigan assistants find a home at San Jose State
If one did not know any better guessing that Ron Caragher
spent some part of his coaching or playing days at the University of Michigan
would be in line after completing his coaching staff on Thursday. Caragher
announced the hiring of for Wolverines offensive coordinator Al Borges to go
along with former Michigan
defensive coordinator Greg Robinson.
The reality is Caragher, a California guy through and through playing
his college ball at UCLA but is evidently very interested in former Wolverine
coaches. Borges was the OC at Michigan
under Brady Hoke until fired after the 2013 season. Robinson was on the Michigan staff as DC in
2009 and 2010.
Caragher also hired Dan Ferrigno as tight ends and special
teams coach putting three former Michigan
assistants at key coordinating spots for the Spartans.
Ferrigno is another California
guy playing college ball for San Francisco
State (1971-1975) with coaching stops
at Oregon State, Cal,
USC, Oregon, Cal
again, and San Diego
Borges is also another California
product working his way up through the high school ranks, and then the California junior college ladders before landing at Portland State (1986-1992). Stops at Boise State,
Oregon, UCLA, Cal, Indiana, Auburn, San Diego State, and Michigan, all as
offensive coordinator, gives the Spartans a well oil offensive mind who is also
known as a great quarterbacks coach.
Caragher looked to shake up the coaching staff after the
Spartans suffered through a 3-9 season in 2014 and a 6-6 season in 2013.
